We are a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the philosophic discussion of film and the other contemporary visual arts. The organization holds paper sessions at each regional meeting of the American Philosophical Association, as well as publishing the print journal Film and Philosophy. Membership in the SPSCVA is required to present papers at these sessions, and to be published in Film and Philosophy.
What We Do
The Society for the Philosophic Study of the Contemporary Visual Arts (SPSCVA) sponsors presentations at its divisional sessions , which are held in conjunction with the Eastern, Central and Pacific Division Meetings of the American Philosophical Association. Papers may address any topic that involves the connection between philosophy and the visual arts: film, photography, video, or other aesthetic media. The Society also welcomes proposals for panels, author-meets-critics, and other special sessions, as well as volunteers to serve as panel chairs and commentators. Presentations should be 20-25 minutes (10-12 pages) in length. The Society typically holds two sessions at each of the APA divisional meetings. Electronic submission of papers as e-mail attachments is required. (see About Us for more information)
The SPSCVA also publishes the annual print journal Film and Philosophy (See Services page)
